After the first exposure to the disease, we were shocked by the societal and personal impact of bipolar disorder – the damage to families, the astounding suicide rate, the misdiagnosis propensity, and the long time for successful disease diagnosis. With this in mind, I resolved to invent a blood test for definitive diagnosis of the disease.
THE BIG IDEA:
Currently the average time between onset of symptoms and diagnosis of bipolar disorder is 12 years. Patients are at risk for worsened symptoms, behavioral problems, drug and alcohol abuse, and suicide attempts. Our product would help address these problems by providing a clinical diagnostic blood test for bipolar disorder.
WHY THIS IDEA IS BETTER THAN THE REST:
There is currently no diagnostic test for bipolar disorder. Our product would be a rapid, reliable, and definitive means of diagnosing the disease using a simple blood test. The diagnostic analysis could be performed using our kits at any medical laboratory.
THE SKY'S THE LIMIT:
We will be using the funds for conducting the collection and proteomic analysis of an initial sample set. We need to get as much information about patient and control samples as possible to aid in our product development. We will also be filing patent applications and conducting market research.
