A MICHIGAN SMARTZONE IS MOVING INTO 2016 WITH PLANS TO EXPAND ITS DEVELOPMENTS - WCMU, by Isis Simpson-Mersha

The SmartZone is a 300 acre piece of land that sits on the south side of CMU.

It was created in 2000 to help entrepreneurs succeed. In the past 15-years, officials said, the zone has created 900 jobs. They announced this month, it’s expected to create 500 more in the next five-years.

Erin Strang is the President and CEO of Central Michigan University Research Corporation.

“What we’re really looking to do is create an opportunity for entrepreneurs to locate in close proximity to one another. So really utilizing the strong robust technology infrastructure that exist in this 300 acres."

Strang said the future direction of the SmartZone was determined in part, based on focus group input.
