Over the course of our first year in the CMU College of Medicine, we utilized patient cases as the primary means to learn material. Realizing that something was lacking in terms of case presentation and delivery, this yielded much space for innovation. After discussions with medical professionals, we decided we would create a case based learning platform (Electronic Care Team) that would improve the way today’s medical students are trained and better equip tomorrow’s physicians for patient care.
THE BIG IDEA:
Medical education is transitioning from lecture based to case-based learning. However, there currently exists no application or tool to fully immerse and engage medical students with the tangible feeling of treating the patient. Electronic Care Team will be an online case-based learning platform that will immerse students while also providing valuable tools such as: multi-user interface, audio and video embedding, medical imaging immersion, financial tools, and the creation of personalized study books for standardized exam review.
WHY MY IDEA IS BETTER THAN THE REST:
Presently there exists one company trying to enter the case-based learning market. We believe this company has a fundamental misunderstanding of the needs of both the end user (medical student) as well as the case creator (faculty). Our product is clinically orientated and basic sciences driven, the hallmark of the pre-clinical years of medical school. Our competitor has chosen the route of highlighting only the clinical aspect, depriving students of the basic science fundamentals. In addition, our platform has several powerful tools for its users to augment the academic content.
THE SKY'S THE LIMIT:
We are excited to continue our great working relationship with the CMURC and its affiliates and seek to use the funds generated in the Exchange to finance the legal and marketing costs as we incorporate. Electronic Care Team anticipates product development in the Fall of 2015, with pilot programs beginning in the Spring of 2016. Following this, we anticipate a full launch with product release and sales beginning of the 2016-2017 academic year.
