MY “AHA” MOMENT
I was working as a Health Educator at a high school. In the first few months of working, I noticed an alarming number of positive pregnancy tests and positive STI tests. Although I was teaching a sex education course I felt that I needed to do more. Having had experience creating an evidence-based life skills program curriculum, I decided to combine my education with my passion and develop a girls empowerment program. Self-love, Self-respect and Sisterhood Inc. (S3) was developed to address the social, emotional and spiritual health of teen girls, empowering them to make healthy life decisions.

THE BIG IDEA
S3 aims to encourage teen girls to make healthy life choices by providing skills and information on various topics such as healthy relationships, reproductive health, stress management, financial literacy, self-love and so much more. To carry out the mission of the organization, S3 offers four programs, Sister to Sister; an eight session in school empowerment program, Empower; a peer to peer mentor program, Inspire Summer Cheer Camp; a weeklong summer cheer camp designed to engage girls in self-love activities while learning basic cheer skills and Girl Talk Conference; a one day self-love conference. We also have a collection of journals.

WHY MY IDEA IS BETTER THAN THE REST
S3 is unique because we focus on empowering teen girls to make healthy decisions. We do not tell them what to do or not do but we give them information and skills to make their own decision. S3 also focuses on using teen girls as peer mentors and program facilitators to ensure the material remains relevant. Lastly, we have a committee of five high school girls that help plan all activities and events.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT
Funds will be used to assist with the marketing and branding needed to expand the reach of the current programs. S3 programs are currently being implemented at one high school in Saginaw and it is now time for us to expand. Expansion will include implementing each program at other high schools in Saginaw County as well as one day opening a Girl Safe Haven community center.
